Theory & practice

Theory test

You must pass your theory test before you can book your practical test.  The theory exam centres are at Bolton and Manchester.

Ramsbottom School of Motoring gives FREE unlimited access to THEORY TEST PRO - an interactive site for your theory preparation.

We now have the Smart Driving app as well.  Just as good and packed with tips and suggestions for your driving as well as the full theory questions.  Give it a try!

No need to buy DVD's or books.  Statistics show you are twice as likely to pass your theory test first time with Theory Test Pro and reduce the time it takes to gain your full licence.

During your practical lessons you will realise the importance of the theory knowledge you have gained. You'll also receive valuable tips and information.

The theory test is divided into two parts:

  1. A multiple-choice test comprising 50 multiple-choice questions covering aspects of the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43.
  2. A hazard perception test consisting of a series of video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified. The pass mark is 44.

Practical test

The Driving Standards Agency says that most learners take at least 45 hours of professional tuition lessons and around 20 hours with friends and family to reach modern day test standards..

There is no average number of lessons -  all learners are different, some will pass more quickly than others.

The days when you could pass your test with a few lessons at a driving school and some practice with a family member are long gone.  Today's road conditions and the standard of driving that is required to pass your test means you have to be good to pass first time.  There is little point in taking your test when you are not ready.

If you are at test standard you should be able to drive for  45 minutes  without any intervention from your instructor.

If you cannot you are not ready.

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.
